Valerie Dearborn wants a life as light and fluffy as cotton candy life, but it's more like a puffer fish: pointy, unusual, and-if not prepared exactly right-deadly. In London for graduate school, Val knows she's finally free. Her father and ex-almost-boyfriend are back in California and she's out of the Vampire hunting biz for good. Or is she? She draws the attention of Lucas, a 1600 year old Vampire, and King to his kind. He's also wicked hot. As golden as Lucifer, and just as tempting, he makes Valerie an offer she can't refuse- help him find out if the Others (Empaths, Fey and Werewolves) still exist or he'll stop protecting those she loves. Lucas tells her that Empaths were a Vampire's biggest weakness before going extinct hundreds of years ago. While the Fey or a Werewolf might kill a Vampire, an Empath could enslave them, seducing or harming with emotions at will. The one detail he leaves out? Valerie is an Empath. And after 1600 years of an emotionless existence, Lucas wants Valerie like a recovering alcoholic wants a wine cooler. Can she keep those she loves alive, stop Lucas from munching on her, survive a fanged revolution and still find a way to have that boring, normal life she's always wanted? Probably not, but boy is she gonna try!

3,5 Stars I'm not sure what I expected when sitting down to read Love is Darkness, but it was not THIS. Valerie's tired of her so-called life with her father and Jack. Yes, she lost her mother to the vampires, and she knows Jack lost his parents too, but killing each and every vampire they meet is not the solution. Valerie doesn't want to be a part of it - she wants to live, experience the world, spread her wings and remove herself from all the death, insecurity, pain and hate surrounding her family. But when she finally thinks she's left it all behind, Lucas re-emerges. Lucas is the King of vampires, and he once saved her life. He wants her to work for him - in return he will keep Nate (her father) and Jack safe. I'm going to be brutally honest. I don't know what to think of the book. Well, yes I do - but I have no idea how to express myself. It was a great read - Caroline's writing is amazing, beautifully put out and you can feel everything Valerie does. You have no doubts about her turmoil of feelings - she wants Jack, she wants Lucas - she hates Jack for the way he treats her, she wants to kill Lucas for cornering her. She wants normal - she wants someone to love her for whom she is, not forcing her to be something she's not, and she's frustrated by her own feelings because she doesn't understand them. Yes, Lucas saved her when she was 16 from a vampire attack - even helped her kill the vampire, but she was brought up learning that vampires were dangerous, best when dead, and Lucas was the worst - he's the King. Imagine how she feels when realizing she's drawn to him? Well... To tell you the truth; more than just attracted to him- she needs him, want him, but has a difficult time acknowledging it. To top it all; Valerie finds herself in the middle of vampire politics were she is depending on Lucas to keep his word, because if he doesn't... more than her own life is at stake. Do I even DARE mention the ending?! The entire book is mesmerizing, and I kept turning page after page wondering what would happen next, but...the ending. The ending alone would be enough to make me run over and buy the next in the series. It's delicious, scary and shows enough change. I have absolutely NO words for how much I actually liked this book - even if it was different than expected. But that's the best part, isn't it? Love is Darkness surprised me, and gave me something else than I expected. And isn't that what we all look for in a book?show more
