Review Text

Heading the first chapter ("Your Ideas about Marriage") is a line from Lord Jim that might be the penultimate critique: "Hang ideas. They are tramps, vagabonds, knocking at the back door of your mind, each taking a little of your substance" - here taking the gut-substance out of living and loving, and giving in return "The Social Science View of Marriage," complete with "norms," "roles," the "team" concept, and (in spite of disclaimers) a traditional orientation. Having established a working vocabulary, the very conscientious authors study the issues that make or break a workable marriage: economics - money and non-dollar income (a useful construct), the woman's position as producer of either or both, the difference between insufficient and mismanaged resources, the question of values; the constructive deployment of leisure hours separately and together; relationships with parents and in-laws, neighbors and friends (friendship being measured on a six-point scale); love, then sex as an expression thereof and also as it bears on family planning - contraception (nix on the pill) and the nature of parenthood. Common sense is the root of most of the observations and prescriptions, which are tiresomely over-illustrated via case histories, statistics, and analogies; but the precepts are salutary, given their somewhat limited perspective on the cultural conventions against which a couple today could (would? should??) project their own marital life-style. And given the unlikely possibility that an objectifying, programmatic, curricular approach can be meaningful at all for what counts above all - the actual curriculum vitae. (Kirkus Reviews)
