‘Mammy’ who lives in Cork is the Irish mother of Xavier, David, Pearse, Kay, Deirdre and Marie. As is often the case with Irish families, three of the children live abroad; Pearse in Australia, Kay in New York and Deirdre in London. Whether they like it or not Mammy keeps in constant contact with all the children abroad via email. She considers herself to be a shining example of modern Irish womanhood and regularly tries all sorts of classes and courses to improve herself. However, since she seems to know everything already the classes rarely last longer than the introductory evening. While Mammy is rather proud of her children she would not want them to be vain so she likes to point out their faults on a regular basis, “To keep them grounded” as she says. Mammy would have liked an up-to-date version of the Walton family where she was the centre of attention and every family member said goodnight to her personally every night but she got her kids with their independent minds instead. When tragedy strikes will Mammy come to appreciate her family more? ...As the year unfolds, the trials and tribulations of Mammy’s family are brought to life through her emails.
