Review Text

This is the second volume of selections from Reik's work (The Search Within was the first). Subtitled On the Psychoanalysis of Romantic and Sexual Emotions it is taken from such published material as A Psychologist Looks at Love, Masochism in Modern Man and heretofore unpublished writings. Reik submits a clinical, dispassionate definition of love as being a fulfillment of one's secret ego-ideal and distinguishes it from the pure sexual urge which has little or no emotional content. He discusses self-awareness, sado-masochism and the emotional differences between the sexes. Freud is criticized for his hazy terminology on this subject which has given rise to a battery of theoretical disputes. A rigid market. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
