Review Text

The way Luke loses Christmas is by falling asleep on the floor by his train on Christmas afternoon, and only waking up three days later to hear that he has been "very, very sick." Most of the story just tells the dream he has in the meantime - of floating through a forest with deer and stars and a waterfall, walking down a track into a tunnel, catching a ride on a red caboose, then sinking tired into his own bed in the grass beside the tracks. Recovered, he doesn't mind "losing Christmas" because his own red caboose is waiting for him under the tree. But, like real dreams, Luke's hasn't much direction, and the red caboose that ties the dream to the waking life is a superficial, far from compelling link. (Kirkus Reviews)
