Review Text

The long way indeed! Moitessier was sure winner in a small-boat round-the-world race sponsored by London's Sunday Times; he rounded the three great capes of Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn and was on the last lap home when. . . well, the God of the sea turned him away from the monsters Money and Civilization, sure corrupters, and sent him half again around the world to paradisaical Tahiti, throwing his winnings back into the face of the Times. "Maybe I will be able to go beyond my dream, get inside it, where the true thing is. . . the singing of all the stars and all the suns and all the moons together, the struggle and the love of the boat with the old ocean on waves so high and magic signs that come from the deep heart of the deep sea." This is a different reading experience - eloquently, lyrically told, the nautical terms kept to a minimum, the whole voyage reflected through Moitessier's introspective logic. Nor does philosophy exclude adventure. The reader is constantly immersed in sun and sea, the slap of the bow, the variable winds, the rise and fall and rise of Moitessier's moodswing.
