Review Text

Mr. White sights another World War II rescue squad mission, this time in Nazi-occupied France, and in the process lops off the careers of three commandos active in previous books (latest The Long Drop, 1970). Number four man, the "private soldier," who narrates, has severe reservations about the Major's extraneous killings - a young soldier, a pregnant girl, an old man - attendant upon their goal, which is to penetrate a French prison and emerge with chemical secrets known only to a Nazi-held professor. But after the long watch, entry and interview with the professor, the Major kills him just in case, and an intra-squad brawl nearly quashes the project. The narrator escapes, leaving one man a defector and two dead, including the Major who expires in icy sacrifice. Tight and tough with but a modicum of moral flap. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
