The next is its giving indications of containing lithic acid and ammonia, both of which have been proved to be present. Dr S. states that it cannot be lithate of ammonia, because any acid VOL. poa 1842, NO. VII. 4 E precipitates it (litlmte of ammonia) from an alkaline solution, Now here is a slight error: lithate of ammonia is not precipitated from an alkaline solution by any acid: it is lithic acid alone which is thrown down. Also the oxalate of lime, existing as an wrinary deposit (" graver) is entirely soluble in nitric acid. Again cystic oxide is insoluble in acetic acid; acetic acid is the beet reagent to precipitate this substance from urine, whereas in Dr Starts paper, it is stated to be soluble in all acids. If Dr S. had done as I have, i.. as soon as the sediment has deposited from the urine, poured off the urine and boiled the sediment in water, filtering whilst boiling hot, he would have separated the " natural sediment" from everything else, and have found it to consist of pure lithate of ammonia. This " natural sediment1' is stated (at p. 173) as being separated from all the other ingredients by ether, but I am at a loss to know how ether separates it, or what part the ether plays. It is only diffused through it, --Mily suspended by agitation and again deposited by repose. The other experiments related to a totally different matter, composed of globules, which are separated by means of ether ( (the same as the last.) Now there is not the slightest proof of identity between the globules and the " sediment: " they are totally distinct, and only possess one common property, the same as possessed by all bodies insoluble in ether, viz. suspension in it by agitation.
