About David Erdal

David Erdal studied Chinese at Oxford, then worked as a teacher in Mao's China. After gaining an MBA at Harvard, he returned to Scotland and led the family paper mill, Tullis Russell, into all-employee ownership. In 1989 he won the Scottish Business Achievement Award. After obtaining a PH.D. at St Andrews on the psychology of sharing, he went on to be MD of Baxi Partnership, which structures and funds all-employee buyouts of medium-sized companies. He lives in St Andrews.

Yes, this is a book about fishermen. Yes, this is a book about the ins and outs of the fishing business. And, yes, if you told me I'd enjoy a book about fishermen and the ins and outs of the fishing business I would have thought you were as mad as a catfish caught in a casting net! <br /><br /> Good books about the fishing industry are as rare as cod (and these days cod are disastrously rare: if you haven't read Charles Clover's <a href="/book/9780091897819/The-End-of-the-Line">The End of the Line: How Overfishing is Changing the World and What We Eat</a> then you really, really should), but David Erdal's excellent <a href="/browse/book/isbn/9780141035604">Local Heroes: How Loch Fyne Oysters Embraced Employee Ownership and Business Success</a> manages to be both fascinating and inspiring. This is not how business books normally are -- and that is a huge compliment to this uplifting book. <br /><br /> Back in 2003, Loch Fyne Oysters was almost taken over by a big corporation. Its 112 employees didn't want that to happen. So they bid for the company... and they won. The company is still going strong and Erdal maintains that it "offers an inspiring example of how sustainability can go hand in hand with commercial success." Employee ownership and careful husbandry of nature can go together with great benefits all around. <br /><br /> This might be a book about fishermen, but it is as compelling as many a drama of the high seas, and far more instructive.
