The pleasantest time throughout the day is that I spend alone, when no one sees me but my Saviour, in thinking of Him, praying to Him, and reading out of His Holy Word. I do think it is very wicked to use this holy Book as some use it;--one of the girls at school yesterday, gave me her Testament to sharpen her pencil on for her, and these were the words she said, 'Take this Testament to sharpen that on, for it is an old thing.' I think that it is very wrong to talk so, for if the cover is old, still we can learn as much from it as if it was new and handsome. I heard a very excellent sermon on this subject from a Mr. L, who preached for us last Sabbath, (not our own minister.) "We should, indeed, as you say in your note, be very thankful to our Heavenly Father for all His mercies to us. I think that I have need, particularly, to praise Him for His goodness, for He has snatched my dear mother almost from the jaws of death. She has been very low, indeed, but she is slowly getting better now, though very weak and feeble still, --if the fever had lasted much longer, it would probably have worn her out. "Two Sabbaths ago was our Communion Sabbath, and oh, dear Jeanie, it seemed to me that I never spent such a delightful Communion season before, the Saviour seemed so near me; and when I partook of the emblems of His dying love, it seemed so strange, that any who were spectators of that solemn scene, and heard part of Christ's history at that time, could withstand the call of God to give Him their hearts.
