Review Text

As certainly as "There are a lot of mysteries surrounding this little animal," there is a lot of excitement packed into this little book. Along with some English 'gentry' who can be relegated to the background since it's the Welsh corgi, raised by a fox, then adopted unbeknownst by two different families, who runs away with the story. Not inclined to hunt on his own until his "mother's" deliberate abandonment forces him to fight a wildcat, he's not about to be petted into forgetfulness either by Frances' solicitous family, and returns to prowl with the fox periodically. "Part of the time he was a dog, part of the time a fox. . . ," and part of the time too he becomes Patrick's after the boy and his vet father, whom he's alerted, rescue the vixen from a trap and get her back on her feet. Then, having brought the children together (and survived a trial run in Patrick's glider), the staunch little corgi leads the now aged and helpless fox into the woodshed to die. A stand-off between the call of the wild and the comforts of home that really keeps the reader guessing. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
