Review Text

The death in 1994 of 104-year-old Lady Kelway - the model of Victorian propriety - closed the book on an unexplained sequence of Grand Guignol episodes which haunted her family. In the 1890s her youngest brother was discovered in their country house garden, dead from a headwound. In 1928, her cousin Georgina was accused, but accquitted, of causing her husband's unexpected death. In 1955, Georgina herself, her brother Edmund and their housekeeper were found, all shot dead in a house in respectable South Kensington. So, what actually happened? Told in three distinct voices this gothic novel uncannily evokes the period class-structure, the relationships between parents and children and the great gaps of understanding and communication between them. A skilful and persuasive first novel. (Kirkus UK)show more
