CONGREGATIONAL PRINCIPLES An early instalment of the promised literature in connexion with the scheme of the Congregational Union for promoting the religious knowledge of the young folks of the denomination, lies before us. It comes from the pen of Dr. R. W. Dale, and is intended as a defence of the particular church system with which he himself is connected; and such a defence as, being mastered by young readers, may not only serve them for an encouragement to stand firm in their own denomination, but also to render a good many reasons to all comers for the faith that is in them. The book is, on the face of it, a book for examination purposes. It is cast, not in the discursive form of an essay, but in the compact shape of a logical syllabus, being divided and subdivided into books, chapters, and paragraphs, with the precision most likely to leave a clear impression on the learner's mind of the work he has gone through, and to enable him to recall on the instant the answer he may need. This feature of it particularly bears the marks of the handiwork of one who in past days has been familiar with difficult examinations himself, and knows the secret of arranging a subject in the manners best available for immediate reference.
