Review Text

Lipman battles along in the cheerful zany style that is particularly her own, whether she is describing her famous BT adverts, her performance of the mother in Oklahoma or her Mrs Malaprop in The Rivals. There is always a note of self-deprecating humour to Lipman's account of her work, and indeed her life. These occassional pieces, some of them previously published in Good House Keeping, whirl us through many of her activities and thoughts - the eating of herrings - The choosing of names - a holiday in Israel - the only Yiddish/Welsh film to be nominated for an Oscar, and Maureen's 50th Birthday party held at Lord's cricket ground. Whatever it is, Maureen has something funny, pithy and brief to say about it. Most of her larky little essays are very brief (one and a half to two pages) perfect for reading in airport lounges. There are few sections to the 'Main Course' plus a 'starter' and a 'dessert' - lots of photographs of Maureen with famous, and endearingly unfamous friends - and planty of puns. 'Heaven scent' is a piece about her favourite and unfavourite smells, and is a short essay, mainly about Woody Allen is called 'Winger takes all'. In her 'starter' she devides the readers she is addressing into 'faithful', 'first time', 'bath time' 'recovery ward' readers and assures us all that there are other things in life besides 'Bloody Reading'. But for Lipman fans there is not much to beat Lip Reading. (Kirkus UK)
