What an unexpected surprise was this to the little party, for even Mrs. Westbrook had entertained no idea of receiving so large a sum. Now, of course, she explained to her husband, as she handed the cheque and the very kind letter of the gentleman sending it to him, her reasons for not consulting him on the subject before taking upon herself to write. "I was so afraid, dear Robert, that you would forbid my making this request, that I thought it better to take the responsibility upon myself." "Thank you, my dear," replied Mr. Westbrook; "you have done well and wisely." How precious was this commendation to the heart of the affectionate wife! It was about three weeks after receiving the above very seasonable supply, that a letter was addressed to Mr. Westbrook by Mr. Darwin, who had had no opportunity of thanking Mr. Westbrook in person for the timely aid and friendly kindness he and his family had afforded to Mrs. Darwin and her children on the evening of the fire. It is true he had been to see the house, and to give orders for the removal of his furniture, but Mr. and Mrs. Westbrook were from home at the time, and he was obliged to be satisfied with leaving a kind message of thanks with Clara.
