On the other hand there are utterances of course--such as those in Isaiah liii.--which make us stand in reverence before the plainness of the prophetic word. But only when we have come to know by experience of the fulfilment, can we be assured of the line to be drawn between Faith and Hope, between Sight and sacred Imagination. Our last interrogation of Hope must have reference to the far horizon. Ask her--" How is it that you are said to abide? Must not the hour come when even Faith is lost in Sight? Must it not be still more true of yourself that you are lost in achievement?" But Hope is not abashed. "No," she answers, "We both abide, my sister Faith and I." And as she speaks, and both sisters look equally confident, we fall to wondering more than ever of that mysterious future, beyond the veil, where once St. Paul saw and heard unutterable things, the life which is life indeed. For Love to abide, that we can understand. But Faith and Hope! Are they needed when we " see Him face to face"? All men are of course out of their depth here, and we can only speak of that which we imagine may be true. The clue is to be found I suppose, if there be a clue, in the belief that there is no limit, none whatever, to the growth and progress in the knowledge of God.
