In 1991 at the age of 55 years, Patrick Harrison is facing the dual crisis of divorce from his 30 year old marriage and a major relocation of his job. These concerns causes him to reflect on his life and wonder how things had gone so horribly wrong. The reminiscing causes him to recall a deep friendship he had with a girl he knew long before he met and married his current wife. This was the bright and lively Sally Powys. She was the same age as him, a schoolmate and close neighbour in the refurbished three story terrace block where there families were rehoused just after WW2 ended. This was situated in an inner suburb of Birmingham in the West Midlands and was surrounded by derelict bombed sites. These serving as an adventure playground for the local children. Life was not easy, money was short and rationing still in place but Sally and Patrick were full of optimism about the future and strove hard to reach their goals. Their close friendship lasted into their early twenties and they shared a lot of activities and fun on the way as well as a few upsets. Sally was an only child and envied Patrick his brothers and sister, especially his little sister. The love between these two girls was mutual and abiding. At the same time Sally's mother doted on Patrick and had high hopes that he would one day become her son-in-law. This was not to be since Patrick eventually married the beautiful, rich Alison and gradually lost touch with Sally. This estrangement was complete after Sally married, much to Patricks regret. The story is set in two time periods, from when Patrick was 55 years old in 1991 and from when he was a 10 year old just after the war ended, via his reminiscing. The two periods gradually coalesce as the story unfolds and details of how they progressed, how people lived, their work and leisure activities, the progress in living standards as well as the historical events that occurred along the way. When Patricks job relocation occurs, he has the unexpected opportunity to meet up with Sally again when he is assigned to organise the initial training of a new graduate intake group which included Sally's daughter. What on earth would Patrick and Sally make of each other after all this time? How would it all turn out?show more
