The road was narrow and perfectly black so the trucks would not see each other until they touched another and there was no use trying to call to them, as they came along, since the noise of the trucks would drown out a call. Moreover, as the officer soon realized, they would meet just where he stood, so he quickly stepped into the ditch alongside the road while he wondered what would happen if one of them should contain fuses. Through some sixth sense, it happened that the trucks stopped when about six inches apart, headed squarely at each other, while the drivers at once climbed off their seats and engaged in a heated argument.
