Daniela Crasnaru is a well-known Romanian poet of her generation. This collection shows two quite different facets of her work. The first part is a selection from work published under the Ceau s,escu r 'egime, in which she uses subtle, figurative language to convey messages without incurring official wrath. The second section contains outspoken work which she kept hidden in a box of onions in her aunt's cellar to prevent its confiscation. As she stated in a letter to Fleur Adcock shortly after the 1989 Revolution: `Now I am free to send you my real poems.' section, This book is intended for readers of poetry; libraries; readers of Fleur Adcock's poetry; those interested in contemporary Romanian history.
