She was looking in his face. For a moment Frank saw her eyes grow large and wild; then all at once the whole face quivered, and without uttering a word she burst into tears. Neither of them attempted to say almost anything Lam Tyrrell. 10 to her. The sight of her bitter grief wrung Frank's heart; but he could not comfort her. When, after a few moments, Dr. Noel rose up to go, he accompanied him almost mechanically from the room. In the hall they sorrowfully shook hands together. "I will be back in a few hours," Dr. Noel said. "And tell her I will bring Dr. Ferguson with me. We will do everything we can for him. There is just a chance that he may pull throug." He turned away hurriedly, leaving Mr. Arnold at the open door--longing to go back to her, but feeling that he dared not go. Yet, when a few minutes had passed, the desire that impelled him to return to her became too strong to be resisted. She was so lonely here--she had no one so near to her even as he was; and--far the most heavy though her portion of it might be--they were, at least, sharing this trouble together.
