Leo Steinberg was an American art critic and art historian and a naturalized citizen of the U.S. Steinberg was born in Moscow, Russia and grew up in Berlin, Germany. He was the son of Isaac Nachman Steinberg. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art. In 1945, he moved to New York City, where he graduated from New York University Institute of Fine Arts with a Ph.D. in 1960, and taught life drawing at the Parsons School of Design. He taught at the City University of New York and the University of Pennsylvania as Benjamin Franklin Professor of the History of Art, from 1975 to 1991. He was professor of the History of Art at Hunter College. He is known for his work in several areas of Art History, notably Renaissance art and Modernism.
