Review Text

Partly a close-up of a very vital twelve-year-old (who may well receive letters from impulsive Americans) and partly a salute to her historic town, even more to nearby Copenhagen and its eight hundredth birthday, this hasn't the revealing wholeness of the collaborators' Lars Olav (1969, 444, J-170) - but neither is Leise's family life so self-contained or determined by its environs. Obviously the Abrahamsens are worldly people of education and means (father a graphic artist, mother a hobbyist weaver), and Leise's a spiritual descendant of Roller Skates' Lucinda Wyman - a collector, an explorer, a playwright, a puppeteer. Except perhaps for the place of gym and gymnastics, neither does her schooling differ significantly from American practice. But her ingratiating personality and fresh good looks enliven the shots of Dragor's waterfront and Frederiksberg Palace, and her impetuous "Let's go to Tivoli" is a fitting finale. Youngsters may skim some of the interjected information but they'll take to Leise. (Kirkus Reviews)
