Leaving out a few identifying platitudes, even the best informed voter would find difficulty in determining which was the other except for the label. It is doubtful if since party platforms were first written there has ever before been produced a set of so non-distinctive utterances as those now offered the voter in the platforms of the supposedly distinct political parties. Whether this sameness recognizes a belief in personal political independence; in the drawing power of intellectual icicles; or in the lack of perspicacity in the voting population is impossible of determination, but the fact remains. Let this be made apparent by a paraphrase of the leading declarations: DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM. REPUBLICAN PLATFORM. Favor an army and navy sufficient to secure the country against interference from any quarter, and able to protect the people's rights anywhere in the world. Favor a world court for the adjustment of international questions. Praises the administration in its conduct of relations with Mexico. Declares Monroe Doctrine to be an article of Democratic faith. Is in favor of all remedial legislation to restore our flag to the seas, and endorses pending shipping bill which has not yet emerged as a law. Conservation policy to be one of use and development without waste or monopoly. The states should confer the franchise upon women. For ultimate independence of Philippines. For civil service. For a national budget. Claim credit for rural credits law. Position and policy as to laws advocated by labor, practically identical in both platforms.
