Review Text

When art dealer and historian Jonathan Argyll is given the task of delivering a painting to a buyer in Rome, a sequence of events begins which sets him and his girlfriend, Italian detective Flavia di Stefano, off on a series of investigative journeys through Europe, alone and together, in pursuit of the solution to a mystery. Why is The Death of Socrates such an important painting? Why are people being murdered because of it? Who are the French police protecting? All is finally - and unexpectedly - revealed in this well-plotted detective thriller. If you enjoy the Italian novels of Michael Dibdin and Donna Leon, you will love this and the other titles in the same loosely connected series, starring the same two main characters. Iain Pears writes a pacy thriller which is as different in tone as it could be from his superbly dark historical novels. The sense of place he creates when his characters are moving between countries, his perfect balance between character and plot so that one does not stifle the other, are always evident. His characters are fully developed and have a life independent of the written page, and he deserves particular congratulations for creating, in Flavia, a completely plausible woman.
