Lancashire and Cheshire Records Preserved in the Public Record Office, London, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)
Excerpt from Lancashire and Cheshire Records Preserved in the Public Record Office, London, Vol. 1 of 2 Courts, &c., I have enumerated, and given details respecting, certain other documents, quite distinct from the records of the Palatinates, or Of the Duchy of Lancaster, which, under judicious treatment, should yield good fruit. In the selection Of these further classes, I have been invariably guided, first, by the quantity of material to be found, and secondly, by the manner in which it is recorded. It may surprise some that in Part I. No notice is taken Of such important classes as the Patent, Close, Charter, and Fine Rolls belonging to the High Court Of Chancery. My reason, however, for ignoring these splendid series Of Enrol ments is, that the Lancashire and Cheshire entries here enrolled are few and far between, and could only be collected at an enormous expenditure of time and labour. Until the collected information to be found in other classes is thoroughly exhausted, it would be absurd to toil after scattered notices. In one case, a single Lancashire or Cheshire record might furnish material for a printed volume, whilst, in the other, the wearisome examination of a hundred Close Rolls might not produce sufficient to make fifty pages of printed matter.
