But satisfied that the veterinary surgeon was either grossly ignorant of his profession, or that, more likely, he was rowing in the same boat with the unprincipled flunkey, he wrote the following note to him: --"Sir--In reference to the horse placed in your hands by Mrs., although you stated to my prejudice that his age was nine off, I can bring forward (independent of the evidence he carries in his own mouth) the most incontestible proofs from the breeder that he was foaled in I852, which brings him to the age l represented him to be viz., seven. Furthermore, I submit that I have yet to learn that any man (V.S. or otherwise) can give a correct opinion as to the exact age of a horse after eight years old; therefore, l consider it only fair to me and just to yourself, that you should more minutely examine the horse's mouth, and give me a correct certificate (if you are competent to do so), before I submit him to an examination at the veterinary college in London, whither I shall take him, when delivered to me, as per agreement. "Yours respectfully." Three or four days elapsed and my friend received no answer to this letter. But judge his surprise when he received the following from the lady, exactly six days after placing the horse in the veterinary surgeon's hands: --"Sir--I had an interview with Mr. (the veterinary surgeon) this morning j he considers there is no longer any occasion to detain the horse under his care. I have desired him to state his opinion in writing, respecting the horse which is now in Mr. stable by itself (this is the stable in which the horse was kicked and bruised), being well fed, and in better health than when Mr took charge of it.
