Review quote

Trina Heidt - Children's Literature
The claim of this book is that it is a collection of classic stories written by some of the most well-loved storytellers of our time; this is inferred from the description on the back cover and the table of contents. However, what the description of the book doesn't say is that many of these "classic" stories are retellings by lesser-known authors (credited properly at the back of the book), and the stories have been altered dramatically in some cases. While this is not the classic compilation it tries to sell itself as, the book is still an enjoyable collection with stories from many parts of the world representing different types of storytelling. Even though many of the stories are retold versions of classics, children will likely enjoy the lyrical, sometimes silly, language, and the foolish, brave, and witty characteristics of the various animal protagonists. At the same time, they will be learning subtle moral lessons without even realizing it. Some favorite titles included in this collection are "Tigers Forever," "The Seal Catcher," The Hare and the Tortoise," and" The Ugly Duckling." Part of the "Kingfisher Treasury" collection. 2003, Kingfisher,
