Review Text

Mann's at her best in stories featuring her archaeologist/secret-agent heroine Ta-mara Hoyland (No Man's Island) - and this one positively dazzles. The fiery death, in 1929, of a decadent artist known only as Rex seems to be reverberating into the present with the poison-murder of Chantal Digby - who married a duke, was a notorious member of Rex's circle, fled to Argentina during WW II, and, much older but no wiser, has returned to London to attempt a society comeback. Meanwhile, Rex's pornographic work is having a vogue of sorts, and ex-schoolteacher Lawrence Cory, whose wife Zoe is a popular TV star, is trying to write a book about him while longing to accept the job offered by Basil Hutber, headmaster of St. Uny's prep school in rural England. Basil's sister Viola, for years a secluded writer of widely-read romance novels, now heads a rapidly growing moralistic movement called Watch-women - a group that Tamara's secret, service boss wants her to moniter. There are other elements in this Byzantine plot: Lawrence's father's search for his roots; his "accidental" death; a star-shaped scar; a heroic WW II episode; some musty attic papers that reveal secrets past and present. Mann pulls them all together with taut but unhurried finesse and holds the reader in thrall to the end - a rare treat. (Kirkus Reviews)
