Review Text

In this second in the Gregory Summers series, a report of an intruder causes Gregory to call on a rich widow, Elise Weissman. To his astonishment, she turns out to be his childhood friend Elsie Riley, whom he last saw 35 years ago. As they renew their friendship Gregory also meets Anthony Lucas, the son whom Elise gave up for adoption many years before. Anthony seems to be a credit to his adoptive parents but Elise has reservations that she hides from her family. Meanwhile, Gregory is busy trying to control the flow of illegal immigrants into the Thames Valley, in conjunction with the National Crime Squad. It's a difficult task, not helped by the abrasive Chief Inspector Kreski of the NCS. But then Gregory gets a midnight phone call from Elise's home - there has been a death in the family, and Gregory must find out who is responsible and follow the trail of fear and violence back to its roots. The different plot strands in this complex thriller are cleverly intertwined, leading up to an exciting and unexpected climax, and the realistic characterization means that the reader swiftly gets involved in the action. Altogether, an accomplished and thoroughly enjoyable novel. (Kirkus UK)show more
