Review Text

McBain created so many of the familiar tropes of current crime writing that it's a genuine pleasure to go back to one of the classic 87th precinct novels, and find just how fresh it still seems - despite all the subsequent imitators. The beleaguered Precinct is dealing with two murders, both of which have made headlines and are creating big headaches for the team. Detective Steve Carrella's best witness is a demented bag lady, but he is soon making headway with the crimes - providing he can deal with a dangerous mistake made by his new partner. Long-time enthusiasts will need no persuading to curl up with this classic piece of McBainiana. (Kirkus UK)show more
