Kevin Sumlin (born August 3, 1964) is the current head coach for the University of Houston Cougars football team. Sumlin is the first African American head football coach in the 60-year history of the Cougars program. He served as an assistant at Washington State, Wyoming, Minnesota, Purdue, served as assistant head coach at Texas A&M for two years, and as offensive coordinator for five years at Oklahoma under Bob Stoops. In addition to Stoops, he has served under R. C. Slocum, Mike Price and Dennis Erickson. In his final year with the Sooners, his offense was one of the best in the country, averaging 44 points per game.
