Excerpt: ...shelf made by one of those boys, am I not justified in speaking authoritatively of the improvement in the manual labor, too, which is more marked considering that many of them never did much of that style of work before, if, in fact, any at all. The new school house, well equipped, standsforth prominently with its two departments, where formerly there was one, and the addition of a piano gladdens the heart of every one on the grounds. Here, too, I can speak personally of the citizens, because a lively correspondence is carried on between them and the writer when separated, and the gradual improvement in the letters is very marked. A sitting room in this building with a large stove, a fire burning brightly within is greatly appreciated during the winter season when the wind whistles noisily without. The jail house also had to undergo a change, and a "government room" has been fitted up in which the "Executive stafi'," when gathered for conference, can obtain inspiration from the benevolent countenance of George Washington in one comer, Abraham Lincoln in the other, both speaking for truth and faithfulness, even though merely represented here by cold statuary. Then, too, "our flag" emphasizes the message of loyalty. ' In the library a delightful change is to be seen owing-to the addition, making it almost double its former size. The interest in good solid books grows and the minds of the citizens correspondingly develop. The hospital is a new feature. Fortunately very few patients have needed treatment, but it is pleasant to know when they do, it is to be found in this little room. which is well supplied with the necessary articles.
