Julius August D pfner was a German Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church who served as Archbishop of Munich and Freising from 1961 until his death, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1958.Julius D pfner was born in Hausen to Matth us and Maria D pfner. He was baptised two days later, on August 28. D pfner had a sister, Maria, and two brothers, Paul and Otto. Entering the Augustinian-run gymnasium at M nnerstadt in 1924, he later attended the Seminary of W rzburg and the Pontifical German-Hungarian College in Rome. D pfner was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Luigi Traglia on October 29, 1939, and then finished his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, from where he obtained a doctorate in theology in 1941, writing his dissertation on Cardinal John Henry Newman. He worked as a chaplain in Gro wallstadt until 1944. On August 11, 1948, D pfner was appointed Bishop of W rzburg by Pope Pius XII
