M ndez (born 11 December 1944) is an Argentine lawyer and academic who served as the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide from 14 July 2004 until 31 March 2007. He was the President of the International Center for Transitional Justice, located in New York City, between 2004 and 2009 and is currently its President Emeritus. In the summer of 2009 he was a Scholar-in-Residence at the Ford Foundation and, between August 2009 and the present he is a Visiting Professor at the Washington College of Law, The American University in Washington, DC. He is currently a Special Advisor on Prevention to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, and Co-Chair of the Human Rights Institute of the International Bar Association. On 29 September 2010, Juan Ernesto M ndez was approved by the United Nations Human Rights Council as Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, unhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
