Despot Jovan Oliver (ca. 1310-1356) was a 14th-century powerful Serbian nobleman and autonomous ruler under Serbian Emperor Du an the Mighty. Jovan was the son a vlastelin Gr in (, Greek) who had lands in some part of the Kingdom of Serbia. He is referred to in a Ragusan source as Oliver Gr ini, his knowledge of Greek lends support to the notion of Greek origin. He ruled his domain, in the modern-day Republic of Macedonia, as a semi-independent prince, acknowledging Du an's suzerainty but not subordinate to him. He probably had supported Dushan's overthrow of his father in 1331, and after the death of his first wife, Karavida, in 1336, he married Maria Palaiologina, Du an's stepmother.
