Review Text

Back home with her father and older sisters after two years in the Oostervelds' Upstairs Room (1972), Annie misses the Dutch farmers who had sheltered her during the war and has trouble adjusting to sister Rachel's work ethic and newly acquired Christianity and, later, to Father's new wife who proves a critical and unloving stepmother though Annie wants only to please her. Reiss' simple child's voice jars a bit when she's filling us in on the fate of Hitler's "close friends and helpers"; otherwise, though essentially a postscript, this is a clear, affecting one - especially for those who met Annie in her more memorable war years.
