Review Text

Myriad dissonant inscrutables: Jonah's prescience and introspection; a shadowy mystery of buried history and contemporary disappearances; the very setting - on and around a Jamaican cay once rent by earthquakes, now complete with apostrophic dialect and the promise of strangeness to come. The four adult characters are skillfully realized, but to the four children younger than Jonah, who is twelve, manifestly analytical imaginings are attributed - which conform to the generally obfuscatory narration: ". . . Nature's aristocratic manner, haughty and always acting independently, doing as she likes, when she likes, with great vigour and authority." Overdrawn, indeed overpowering for readers of Jonah's age or any other age, in spite of - or because of - its psychogothic preoccupations. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
