Review Text

A second, short novel trails an R.A.F. squadron through a few missions in the air- and back to a base in Sumatra in 1942. Attacked by the fighters from a Japanese carrier, Wing Commander Buchanan goes down- and Johnny (Purple) Mason replaces him, Johnny who is something of an immaculate young man- steady, assured, unquestioning and unafraid. To Georges Perrier, an intellectual without faith but still the hope that he may find one, Johnny is both a friend and something more- so that when Johnny is killed, Georges through his death finds a meaning- if it is only the revenge which takes him on a suicidal attack against a cruiser... Not important, and likely to be muffled by the gunfire of more ambitious books- but a direct, concentrated job. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
