John Frank Sanders (born November 20, 1945, at Grand Island, Nebraska) is a retired American baseball player, coach, manager and scout. Although he began and ended his career in the professional game, he is most known as the longtime (1978-97) head baseball coach of the University of Nebraska, where his teams won a school-record 767 games. Sanders was a four-sport (baseball, basketball, football and track) star at Grand Island High School, before he was signed to his first professional contract as an outfielder with the Kansas City Athletics by A's scout Whitey Herzog. Sanders threw and batted right-handed, stood 6 feet 2 inches (1.9 m) tall and weighed 200 pounds (91 kg).show more
