Sir John Winthrop Hackett, senior KCMG (4 February 1848 - 19 February 1916) was a proprietor and editor of several newspapers in Western Australia, a politician and University chancellor. Hackett was born near Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland, the eldest child of the Rev. John Winthrop Hackett, M.A., and his wife, Jane Sophia Monck, n e Mason (daughter of Henry M. Mason, LL.D.).
