The following facts bear on axo-is in LXX and on Jewish traditions about the Hebrew original of the word. 1690 b (i) Apart from a few unimportant exceptions, 5ftais, in canon. LXX, means the "release" of the Sabbatical Year, or of Jubilee, and is not connected with atonement except once in a passage describing the scape-goat that is (Lev. xvi. 26) "for Azazel." Josephus speaks of Jubilee as the year (Ant. iii. 12. 3) "wherein debtors are freed from their debts and slaves are set at liberty"; and he says more
