Excerpt from The Jesus of History, Before the Bar of Historical Criticism
In this little book, I have not tried to consort the respectable man on the street;nor academic prejudices, nor professors, nor clergyman with big salaries, who have their own interests to serve. Such people will not change their opinions till the great public moves, and then, they know it all. They knew that the change was sure to come. In the new current of opin ions they will still be found ou the side of rest ect ability. I appeal only to intelligent. Honest and Open minded people. I reproach myself for one thing only - that I did not see the truth. And speak out sooner than I did. If my theories of Religion become re spectable, I may probably have to abandon them from natural instincts. I will then be away of! In unbeat en tracks, searching for new truths. Respectability is the soil upon which hypocrites and cowards grow.
