Air Marshal Sir James Anthony Rowland, AC, KBE, DFC, AFC (1 November 1922 - 27 May 1999) was a senior officer in the Royal Australian Air Force, serving as Chief of the Air Staff from March 1975 to March 1979. He was later appointed Governor of New South Wales from 20 January 1981 to 20 January 1989 and Chancellor of the University of Sydney (1990-1991). In 1922, Rowland was born in Armidale, New South Wales and was educated at Cranbrook School and the University of Sydney. He left university in 1942 to enlist in the Royal Australian Air Force as a pilot.show more
