Review Text

Omsbondsman Pearson (who did an earlier biography of lan Fleming) refuses to Let Die and has brought the great man back almost alive if quite changed. TRUE? Did James Bond go to Eton and have an everpresent Aunt Charmian and is it really possible that Fleming and Bond knew each other having met at Kitzbuhel? FALSE? Was Bond's very favorite gun the Beretta .32 (p. 163) or was it really that "ladies' gun" the Beretta .25 as itemized in Kingsley Amis' 1965 James Bond Dossier (p. 106)? DOUBTFUL? Was Ian Fleming reading the New York Review of Books the year 007 was born? Did it exist at that time? Could Fleming have really understood it? ICONOCLASTIC? Was James Bond really "scared of women" out of the sack and did he dislike them in the lavatory? SUPPOSITIOUS? Was M (whom Pearson earlier contended was Bond's mother figure although Amis calls him a father figure) on the point of cracking up at the close or was it just his 4.6 "irascibility index"? QUESTIONABLE? Will the faithful really go back to reading the oeuvre to be able to unauthorize this put-down send-up? Who knows - but in any case it's a good idea which doesn't quite thunderball. You sort of miss the "demi-giant" of yesterday's legend. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
