John Elvin Harshman (July 12, 1927 in San Diego, California), was a professional baseball pitcher from 1945-1960. He played for the New York Giants, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, and Cleveland Indians. Jack Harshman began his professional career at the age of 17 in 1945 for the San Diego Padres of the minor league AA Pacific Coast League. For the first five seasons, Harshman was being trained and conditioned to be a major league hitter instead of a pitcher. Jack's short stint in San Diego ended with a .254 batting average in 67 at-bats.
