Review Text

Mellow, trouble-cluttered romance on the Scotland/England border. On the English side of the River Tweed dwells agreeable Judy, who'll soldier through her difficulties with help from her own kind family and a close-knit community where the most ambitious event is an annual charity fete ("a fete," comments Judy's brother, "worse than death"). And from the Scots bank of the Tweed comes Judy's love - worldlier, wealthier Nelson. Nelson and Judy romp happily into an affair in London, during which Judy throws caution (and a birth control device) to the winds. But before they can announce their engagement, Nelson is killed in an accident, and grieving, pregnant Judy returns to her helpful, hearty family. Illegitimate baby Emma is born and adored, but Judy is finally pressured into marriage with stuffy John. Though impotent, he wants a child and plans to adopt Emma as his heir. But a few years into that marriage, Judy realizes her mistake - and when Nelson's older brother Willie intrudes his spirited self, she takes flight. A domestic romance which is a slight cut above the run in quiet warmth and easy chatter. (Kirkus Reviews)
