Review Text

An enormously combustible novel about the N.Y. Fire Department in Brooklyn - the adventures of an engine company during the height of the Christmas season. Ted Blanchard's whole family has built its life around the fire department for generations, and so have the McCluskys and Malones, many of whose brave men have died in the line of duty. But now Brooklyn is burnt-out, eroded, overcrowded, and low on facilities (sometimes including power). And in particular we follow one victim of urban blight: teenage drug addict D. J. Ramirez - who once assisted the firefighters during a public education campaign but has now beaten up his mother, stolen her small cache of savings, and left home forever to team up with fellow druggie Juan. So, while Whalen shows us life in the firehouse (dazed interludes between smoke inhalations, tall tales and camaraderie, families and romances), D. J. and Juan are setting fires and stealing to support their $165-a-day heroin habits; and - after Juan is killed in a cellar fire - D. J. ends up causing the climactic big-disaster tenement blaze. The rescue of trapped tenants goes on at vast length, with man after man dying in blazing apartments. Stereotyped characters, but lots of busy, hot, firefighting action. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
