Review Text

Be warned, this is not one of the Kay Scarpetta forensic thrillers with which the author made her name, although Dr Scarpetta does have a walk-on part in it. Isle of Dogs is the third in Cornwell's curious series of 'comedies' featuring Judy Hammer and Andy Brazil of the Virginia State Police and is centred on the island of Tangier (part of Virginia but not very keen on the idea) which has a history of piracy and inhabitants claiming descent from original colonists who sailed from the real Isle of Dogs in the Thames. Thrown into this particular melting pot are: the idiotic Governor Crimm, who is being poisoned with laxatives by an untrustworthy aide, a gang of modern-day road pirates who have kidnapped Superintendent Hammer's irritating dog, a fraudulent dentist kidnapped by the entire population of Tangier Island and a psychopathic female killer who is in many ways the most interesting and definitely the scariest, character of the lot. As if there was not enough confusion in the state of Virginia, Andy Brazil dedicates himelf to posting daily community service anti-crime essays on the Internet under the name 'Trooper Truth'. Not only are these diversions trite and completely unbelievable but amazingly, every character in the book not only has time to read them but seems to devour them avidly. If this is a satire on the political state of Virginia, then it is a pretty heavy-heanded one with more than a touch of cruelty in some of the humour. Admirers of Cornwell's past thrillers, which were truly innovative and mould-breaking, will rather wish she would get back to doing what she does best: scaring the pants off us!
