But, while the foolish virgins were running hither and thither, seeking help, and finding none, "The bridegroom came, and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut." And who were ready? you will ask--how had they been prepared? They were the wise virgins, and their wisdom was the gift of God. In that day, all other wisdom will prove vain; nothing will serve but faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who believe and love him shall be owned by him before his Father and his holy angels; he shall take them by the hand, and say, "Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world"--and they shall go in with him to the marriage. We will not attempt to describe to you the joy and gladness that shall prevail at this eternal feast. It is compared, in the parable before us, to a marriage banquet, which, in eastern countries, is always celebrated with peculiar festivity and pomp. The sacred writers have heaped together images of the most glowing and exalted character in order to describe the bliss of heaven. But, like the Queen of Sheba at the court of Solomon, when the wondering spirit of the believer is introduced within the portals of glory, and sees "the meat of his heavenly Father's table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers and their apparel," he will be ready to exclaim, with her, "It was a true report that I heard in mine own land--and, behold! the half was not told me."
