Excerpt: ... automatic engine of substantial construction for belted connection to 75 kilo-watt slow speed alternating current generator, with one best oak tanned endless double belt 15 inches wide and 66 feet long. Section 3. (a) Proposals will be received and considered for one belted type, slow speed, 60 cycle, single phase, compensating 75 kilo-watt alternating current generator to deliver current to switch board at 1100 or 2200 volts, with pulley of diameter to correspond with engine selected. Exciter, switch board, station wiring, etc., to be as in original specifications. Notice. The original specifications govern in all respects except where the same are in direct and evident conflict with the alternate specifications. The bids on the above specifications were opened June 6, 1903. The only propositions for the complete plant as specified were $9,193.60 for direct connected machinery and $8,231.38 for belted machinery. The several sections were as follows: There were several propositions for one or more portions of the work. The lowest combination of these was $8,785.73 for the direct connected plant and $7,49773 for tne belted out-fit. When the estimated cost of the pole-line and building was taken into account it was decided that the cost would exceed the money in sight for the investment. To make certain of this the specifications were re-submitted to the parties who had made propositions and specifications were also given them for the power station and pole line with the request to bid upon the entire plant ready for operation. When the second lot of propositions were received it was apparent that the plant as specified would cost too much.
